Unemployment Up Again; Stimulus FAIL

President Obama's speech to students is not unprecedented; in fact, President George H. W. Bush and President Ronald Reagan both gave speeches to students.  I think it was inappropriate then, and it is inappropriate now.  The difference is that in 1991 Democrats criticized Bush giving such a speech, but now they're supporting the President.  Reverse that for the Republicans' response.

Obama is going to use his speech next week to try and solidify support for a way to ultimately have government takeover health care.  The latest idea would be to have the government option as a backup plan, where it would be created if certain triggers are met.  Of course, all we have to go on right now are the bills as they are currently written, and under the House version a majority of Americans would qualify for federally subsidized health insurance and old people would be paying more for medicine after they cut back prescription drug benefits for Medicare.

The unemployment rate rose to 9.7% last month, as 216,000 jobs were lost.  The real unemployment rate (what the navel-gazing media would report if a Republican was President) is 16.8%.  The Canadian economy added jobs.

Sixty percent of likely voters say that tax increases hurt the economy.  This alone isn't enough for me to have faith in the economic intelligence of the American people.

Obama's regulation czar advocated removing people's organs after they died unless they specifically said not to do so.

A majority of Americans say that Congress is too liberal.  That includes Republicans.

The White House will post on the internet the visitor logs of people who come to the White House.  This won't be schoolchildren who go for a tour; it'll be a list of lobbyists.

Did you ever think that the Chinese flag would be flown at the White House?

A man in Lawrenceburg, Indiana was forced to give a urine sample over suspicion of drunk driving.  By "forced" I mean strapped to a gurney and having a catheter inserted against his will.

Before they lost contact with it, an Indian space probe found tracks from Apollo 15's moon rover on the moon's surface.  Can the conspiracy theories stop now?

In the NSS department today, a new study shows that men lose their minds when talking to pretty women.

A couple of Republican Senators got in trouble yesterday because they are proposing a Constitutional amendment that would stop the Democrats' takeover of health care, and they stumbled when somebody asked them if Medicare is unconstitutional.  Repeat after me:  YES.

Houston County students will be allowed to opt out of Obama's speech on Tuesday.

The Macon Telegraph's Charles Richardson gives some advice to parents who send their kids to schools in Houston County that they are not zoned for.  Of course the advice that he gives is not to demand school choice, but simply to move.

Gold is near $1,000 per troy ounce.  You can take advantage of that by going to Forever Diamonds to sell your old gold.

Jeff,
Thanks for today's updates. I'm glad to hear the HCBE decided not to force students to watch the Obama video message, allowing parents to have their children "opt out". However, this decision stops one step short of the appropriate deference to parental rights - that is, it is the parents' first right to decide what politicians their children are exposed to, if any. Instead of giving parents the choice to "opt out", the HCBE should by default prevent any politicians from having unfiltered access to children. They should then allow parents to "opt in" once they've reviewed the message and found it to be appropriate. Would it be too difficult for the principals to send out the info and ask for signed permission slips??
